Chinese tech company Xiaomi has announced the release of its latest smartphone, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which boasts a variable aperture main camera, among other high-end features.

The smartphone is an upgrade from the Xiaomi 13 Pro, with improved hardware additions. The 1-inch Sony IMX989 main camera sensor now includes a variable aperture between f/1.9 and f/4.0, allowing users to control the amount of light entering the sensor and the depth of field of their images and videos. While Samsung previously offered variable aperture controls with the Samsung Galaxy S9 series, Xiaomi's larger sensor and greater control over light intake should provide superior results.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra features a quadruple-camera array, with a 50-megapixel f/1.8 ultrawide lens utilizing the Sony IMX858 sensor with a 122-degree field of view. The telephoto system consists of two 50-megapixel Sony IMX858 sensors, one offering a 75mm (2.5x) equivalent f/3.0 telephoto and the other a 120mm (5x) “super-telephoto” with a maximum f/3.0 aperture. The device also includes Leica optics and various in-camera functions and features for post-processing.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra also includes impressive internal specs, such as a 6.73-inch 120Hz QHD+ AMOLED screen and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor paired with up to 16GB RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. A 5,000mAh battery powers the device, with 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging included. The charging port has also been upgraded to USB 3.2, which provides 5Gbps transfer speeds via USB-C.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra will come in black, olive green, and white colors with a synthetic leather finish. While the smartphone is expected to launch globally with a price tag of €1,299, no information has been provided on when it will be available for purchase outside of China.
