Twitter is Developing a Feature that Lets You Hide Your Blue Checkmark
Twitter may soon offer a new feature allowing users to hide the blue checkmark they received by paying for its Blue subscription. App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi recently found a screen showing that Twitter is developing a control panel for verification settings, one of which is the option to “Show or hide your blue checkmark on your profile.”
It is important to note that Twitter has not officially announced this feature, and is still in development. The company is also known to take a long time to release promised features. However, the move could be beneficial for users who feel stigmatized for having the blue checkmark, as it can be seen as a symbol of elitism.
Currently, the blue verified checkmark indicates that a user either pays for Twitter Blue or was verified through the legacy verification program. However, Twitter has stated that it will be phasing out legacy verification come April, meaning blue checks will solely signify Twitter Blue subscriptions.
It is unclear whether hiding the blue checkmark would fully protect users from scrutiny, as tweets from verified Twitter Blue users can still be searched. Twitter could allow users to opt out of appearing in those search results as well, but there is no evidence of that.
The feature still needs to be confirmed by Twitter, and it is uncertain when or if it will be released.
