Snapchat announced at its Snap Partner Summit that its AI chatbot powered by OpenAI's GPT technology will now be available for free to a global audience. The feature, initially launched in February for Snapchat’s paid subscribers, allows users to chat with an AI chatbot directly in the app.

According to Snap, users have sent nearly 2 million messages per day using the chatbot. The feature will be upgraded with new functionality, including adding My AI to group chats, getting recommendations for places on Snap Map and Lenses, and sharing Snaps with My AI and receiving chat replies.

The company plans to integrate more personalization features, such as allowing users to name their AI and create a custom Bitmoji for it. However, the generative response feature will be limited to Snapchat+ subscribers. During the presentation, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel mentioned that My AI could recommend a recipe if a user sends a Snap of their garden.

After its initial launch, the AI chatbot received criticism for unsafe responses. In response, Snap rolled out new tools, including age filters, to keep the AI responses more age-appropriate. The company is also making the chatbot more appealing to younger users by allowing it into group chats with friends. The AI chatbot will enter the chat with a sparkle next to its name to make it clear it's a bot and not another group member.
