Samsung Display Unveils New OLED Panels, Including Rollable Flex for Smartphones and Tablets
Samsung Display, a leading OLED technology provider, has announced its upcoming exhibition of innovative OLED panels for various device segments. Among the panels to be showcased is the company's first-ever rollable OLED panel designed for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. Named Rollable Flex, this OLED panel possesses the unique ability to be completely rolled up, allowing it to fit into significantly smaller spaces.
The Rollable Flex OLED panel developed by Samsung Display will be presented during the SID Display Week 2023 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California, USA. Capable of stretching up to an impressive 12.4 inches in size, the panel can be rolled open from 49mm to 254.4mm, transforming a phone-sized device into a tablet-sized one. In contrast to conventional folding and sliding screens, which offer up to 3x scalability, Samsung's Rollable Flex OLED panels offer over 5x scalability, expanding from 49mm to 254.4mm.
Samsung Display explains that the remarkable flexibility of the Rollable Flex OLED panel is achieved by enabling it to roll and unroll along an O-shaped axis, much like a scroll. "The biggest feature is that we were able to turn a difficult-to-carry large-sized display into a portable form factor by making it rollable," explains Samsung Display.
In addition to the Rollable Flex, Samsung Display will unveil other cutting-edge OLED panels at SID Display Week 2023. This includes the Flex In & Out OLED panels, which can fold both inwards and outwards. Unlike current foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that fold only inwards, the Flex In & Out panels eliminate the need for a separate cover display on the outside, resulting in slimmer and lighter phones.
Furthermore, Samsung Display plans to showcase the Flex Hybrid and Slidable Flex Solo OLED panels. The Flex Hybrid OLED combines folding and sliding technologies within the same panel, providing a solution to accommodate larger screens in compact devices. This technology was initially unveiled by the company last year. Additionally, the Slidable Flex Solo OLED panel can expand from a 13-inch tablet to an impressive 17-inch screen.
Samsung Display's array of new OLED panels demonstrates their commitment to pushing the boundaries of display technology, offering enhanced flexibility and versatility across various device categories.
