Google Messages Introduces Ultra HDR Image Support in RCS Chats
In a recent, quietly rolled-out update, Google Messages has discreetly embraced the era of Ultra HDR images within RCS chats. This innovative feature, first noted by TheSpAndroid, is currently exclusive to Pixel 8 series devices updated to Android 14, with expectations of broader compatibility in the future.
Ultra HDR, a format introduced by Google in July 2023 and launched with Android 14, elevates JPEG-formatted images by embedding HDR metadata. This allows the image to display standard quality on non-HDR screens while revealing the enhanced HDR version on compatible displays. Notably, Google Messages seamlessly applies the HDR gain map upon viewing, ensuring that this vital data is retained and not stripped during transmission.
This development aligns with Google's commitment to advancing high dynamic range (HDR) technology, building upon the groundwork laid in Android 13. The timing of this update coincides with Apple's announcement of RCS messaging support on iOS, slated for a 2024 release. With all iPhones, since the iPhone 12 is equipped for HDR image capture, this compatibility means Android users can seamlessly view HDR photos sent via RCS.
RCS, integrated into Android three years ago, continues to enrich the default Google messaging app experience. Offering features akin to popular chat apps like iMessage and WhatsApp, RCS has evolved to include emoji reactions and reminder nudges, making it a dynamic and user-friendly platform for Android users.
