Google Meet is adding 1080p resolution to its video conferencing service, in an attempt to provide a clearer image for users during their virtual meetings. The latest update will put Google Meet in the same category as its competitors, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, who already offer calls in full HD. Until now, Google Meet's highest quality was limited to 720p resolution.

The update, however, has some limitations. It is currently web-only and can only be accessed by users with 1080p capable cameras. Furthermore, it is restricted to two-person meetings and only available for paid versions of Google Meet, such as Google Workspace Business Standard or Plus, and Enterprise Starter, Standard, Plus, and Essential. Google One subscribers can also access the feature if they have at least 2TB of storage on their device.

Users must enable the feature manually, as it is turned off by default. When logging into a new Google Meet video call, a notification will appear from the "change" button labelled with three vertical dots, giving users the option to turn on the 1080p resolution feature. Users can also change their resolution at any time by clicking on the same button, then selecting settings, video, and choosing from the resolution options available.

The introduction of 1080p resolution follows other recent updates to Google Meet, such as emoji reactions and automatic transcriptions.
