Ken Pillonel, the engineer who previously modified the iPhone and AirPods cases with USB-C ports, has unveiled his latest project on his YouTube channel. He has transformed his broken 2020 AirPods into wired USB-C earphones with a stylish two-tone black and white design.

In addition to their unique look, the wired AirPods are much more repairable than the regular wireless AirPods, which have received a 0/10 repairability score from iFixit. Ken hopes that his project will encourage people to consider the reparability of products before buying them.

Although Apple still sells its original wired AirPods with both 3.5mm and Lightning connectors, there are also many third-party wired options available. The Swap Club offers a battery replacement service for AirPods, allowing customers to trade-in their dead AirPods for a refurbished pair with fresh batteries.

Ken Pillonel’s USB-C wired AirPods are a unique and innovative addition to the market, and his project may inspire others to experiment with customizing and repairing their own technology.
