Android manufacturers appear to be preparing deep red colorways for their next flagship phones, anticipating that Apple will debut the same shade on this fall's iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The circular leak pattern reveals how smartphone design trends can become self-fulfilling prophecies.
Bloomberg managing editor Mark Gurman first predicted a "deep red" iPhone 18 Pro option in February, noting the color would likely sit alongside last year's popular Cosmic Orange finish. His reporting suggested Apple might worry about red cannibalizing orange sales, but that concern could be offset by making the new shade much darker than the bright orange.
That prediction gained unexpected corroboration this month when Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station claimed the iPhone 18 Pro "will most likely come in a deep red color." The leaker based this assertion not on Apple supply chain sources, but on having "seen prototypes of this color for the next generation of flagship Android phones."
The situation creates a chicken-and-egg dilemma for industry observers. Android manufacturers frequently follow Apple's design cues, as demonstrated when Cosmic Orange sparked an industry-wide trend after its September 2025 debut.
Multiple Android brands adopted similar bright orange finishes within months, and accessory makers cashed in with skins and cases mimicking the look.
Now those same companies may be preparing to copy a color Apple hasn't officially announced. Digital Chat Station claims to have seen "many next-gen Android flagships in a new deep red colorway," which they believe represents "a shade Apple will debut on the new iPhones." The leaker shared reference images suggesting this could become the next standout color across both ecosystems.
Analysts note two alternative explanations beyond simple copying. Android companies and Apple might both be responding to the same design trend forecasts from industry specialists who predict where color preferences are heading each year.
Alternatively, Android manufacturers could be reacting directly to Gurman's February report rather than any leaked Apple plans they've obtained independently.
The deep red speculation arrives alongside other expected iPhone 18 Pro upgrades. Reports indicate Apple may shrink the Dynamic Island by up to 35 percent through under-display Face ID technology, providing more usable screen space. The device is also expected to feature Apple's first in-house C2 modem replacing Qualcomm components and a new A20 Pro chip built on a cutting-edge 2nm process.
Apple appears set to shake up its launch strategy this year, with rumors suggesting standard iPhone 18 models could be delayed until March 2027 while Pro versions arrive this September alongside a potential foldable iPhone. This staggered approach would give the premium models exclusive spotlight during the traditional fall launch window.
Whether deep red becomes reality will be confirmed when Apple unveils its next flagship lineup, expected in September following last year's mid-month event schedule.
